Update: How many chromosomes does the zebra finch really have?

In my article The Sunda Zebra Finch and the Australian Zebra Finch: from Fringilla to Taeniopygia, I explore the history and latest insights regarding the reclassification of the zebra finch in detail. I also discussed a 2025 preprint that gave the impression that the total number of chromosomes (diploid number) differed from what previously thought (80)
Today, the researcher informed me that the confusion in this preprint arose purely from the way sex chromosomes were counted in the initial analyses. In the final publication in the journal Cell, this has now been set straight: the zebra finch indeed has the expected number of 80 chromosomes (or 40 pairs), divided into a small number of large macrochromosomes and a large number of very small microchromosomes.
It remains fantastic to see how modern DNA techniques continue to give us deeper insights into the genetic makeup of our birds—and how valuable it is to communicate directly with scientists. The article on the website has now been fully updated!
